This is Paul Janensch with a Treasure Coast Essay about taking a guided tour of the Old Vero Ice Age Site and going back 14,000 years. The site is on the Main Relief Canal near the Vero Beach airport. Ancient human remains were uncovered there in 1915. But the site was not closed off until recent years. Now researchers from the Mercyhurst Archaeological Institute in Erie, Pennsylvania, in partnership with the Old Vero Ice Age Sites Committee, are digging for evidence that humans lived here at the same time as Ice Age mammals. Public tours are being given through April. My wife Gail and I took one. Under a large canopy we watched workers scraping away soil a few centimeters at a time. To sign up for a tour, put old vero ice age in an internet browser. It’s fascinating, free and fun. I’m Paul Janensch.
